Humane Society of the United States Endorses Petplan Pet Insurance
Petplan Pet Insurance is the #1 insurer of pets in the US based on the reports of pet owners, not corporations. They pride themselves on excellent customer service.
90% of policy holders renew their pets' policy every year. This is an indication of a great success rate. When you adopt a pet from the HSUS, you may be asked if you want to learn more about having your pet insured with Petplan as they have been recommending pet insurance for about 20 years now, and Petplan has been around for 30 years. So, for 10 years, Petplan has proven itself to the HSUS.
Petplan offers insurance for cats and dogs who are, of course, the mainstay of any veterinary practice. They provide reimbursement for veterinary costs arising from (but not limited to) accidents, illnesses and injuries as well as annual veterinary costs. Some of the things that they cover include hospitalization, emergency care, diagnostics such as x-rays, MRI's and endoscopy, surgery, cruciate ligament repair, organ transplants, cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation therapy without any exclusions to any type of cancer (most policies exclude certain types of cancer, so this is really thorough), referrals to a specialist, tooth extractions, root canals, prescription medication, and even homeopathic remedies such as acupuncture, hydrotherapy and chiropractic treatments.
The plans that they offer are Bronze, Silver and Gold and depending on which insurance plan you choose, you can also get reimbursement for lost pet recovery costs, boarding fees vacation cancelation and even death benefits. Maximum annual benefits reset every year and you can recoup up to $8,000, $12,000 or $20,000 respectively according to the plan you choose.
Petplan pet insurance offers discounts like 10% off for multiple pets, 10% off for assistance dogs, 10% off if you micro-chip your pet, they even give you 5% off just by signing up on the internet. The policies for dogs and cats are very similar, but the premiums are probably a bit lower for cats. When you think about it, cats and dogs often suffer from the same conditions and have the same needs. I have seen other policies reduce what is covered in cats.
If you add up the costs of treating the maladies that can bring a cat to the veterinarian, you come to an astonishing figure. When ingestion of a foreign object, traffic accident, heart failure, bladder stones, diabetes, and anorexia are all added up (although your cat probably won't suffer from all of these conditions) the tally comes to $35,746. WOW! And when you think about the $9.2 million spent each year in the US alone on veterinary expenses, you can see how having the right insurance policy is a must.
Petplan pet insurance appears to offer the most thorough policies out there, but their premiums are a bit more than other lower costing insurance plans. Low cost insurance plans aren't bad, they do quite well, but they have more exclusions in order to keep costs down. The only way to know how much the right plan will cost for you is to ask for a free quote.
If you are serious about pet insurance, you really need to give Petplan a try.
